Goji Berries, Chia Seeds, Cacao, Acai…what are these things?
‘Superfoods’ are the most powerful foods on earth.
They provide an exponential nutritional benefit per calorie as compared to ‘regular’ foods - they are efficient nutrient delivery vehicles. These powerhouses pack large amounts of antioxidants, polyphenols, vitamins, and minerals.
Superfoods are usually plant-based foods and provide a wide variety of color into your nutritional protocol, thus giving us all the nutrients we need to live longer and healthier lives.
Additional tip: You don’t need to consume very much to receive the full benefit. It’s amazing what a handful of goji berries can do for you.
Example: Oranges vs Camu Camu
When everyone thinks Vitamin C they think oranges. To get 100% of your daily recommended intake of vitamin C, you need to eat about 2 small oranges, or roughly 114 grams of oranges. By comparison, you only need 1.25 grams of Camu Camu to do the same thing! With that being said, you need to eat 91 times the amount of oranges to receive the same nutritional benefit in 1.25 grams of Camu Camu. This comes with 15 times more calories, and 10 more grams of sugar. Camu Camu gives you all the nutrients with 0 sugar!
Winner: Camu Camu
Example: Peanut Butter vs. Spirulina
You need to eat slightly over 68 grams, about 4 spoonfuls, of peanut butter to receive 15 grams of protein. The damage? 10 calories, 35 grams of fat, 7 grams of sugar, 290 mg of Sodium, and 17 grams of carbs.
You need to eat just 20 grams of Spirulina to receive 15 grams of protein. The benefit? 75 Calories, 2.5 gram of fat, 0 grams of sugar, 200 mg of sodium and only 5 carbs.
Spirulina is a protein powerhouse. It is also raw and breaks down easier in our body, so the protein helps our cells rebuild easier and more effectively.
Plus you get these as your ingredients in "normal peanut butter":
MADE FROM ROASTED PEANUTS AND SUGAR, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: MOLASSES, FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OILS (RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN), MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, SALT.
These ingredients do not process in our bodies and cause inflammation, feeling tired, and potential long term negative impacts on the body.
These examples show that superfoods have up to 200x the nutritional value per calorie than 'normal foods'.
Each of these foods drive nutrients directly to the cell level and have superior bio-availability, meaning our bodies use the nutrients extremely well and don’t need to expend as much energy to break them down. Other foods require significantly more energy to break down in the body, thus making use tired, whereas superfoods go right to work without causing the crash.
These age-old substances have a multitude of benefits, and they taste amazing. For thousands of years they have been critical to driving prosperous civilizations and have even been used as currency.
Eating superfoods is a great way to Live Better. They help defend against food cravings by satisfying the body with what it needs to be healthy. These foods will increase stamina and strength, provide natural energy, protect your immune system, improve skin complexion, and help you feel and look younger!
Every superfood tag line (and maybe the ultimate secret to good nutrition) should read, “Quality over quantity.”
Superfoods are the best sources of antioxidants, enzymes, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, minerals, polysaccharides, proteins, and vitamins - the definition of quality.
